Thankfully, you don’t need to know every last detail to enjoy the journey. This guide focuses on the six mainline Halo games, breaking down the key events, major characters, and biggest turning points. Whether you’re preparing for your first trip aboard a Halo ring or simply need a refresher, here’s the Halo story explained.

Halo: Combat Evolved

The story begins in the year 2552. Humanity is losing a devastating war against the Covenant, a powerful alliance of alien species united by religion. Their belief is simple: activating the mysterious Halo rings will begin the “Great Journey” and elevate them to a higher existence.

After fleeing a Covenant attack, the UNSC Pillar of Autumn discovers Halo Installation 04. Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, one of humanity’s last Spartan super soldiers, is awakened from cryosleep and sent to investigate.

Initially, Halo appears to be an ancient alien megastructure filled with secrets. However, things quickly take a darker turn when the Flood escapes. This parasitic lifeform infects living creatures and rapidly overwhelms entire armies.

Master Chief soon discovers Halo’s true purpose. Rather than destroying the Flood directly, the ring wipes out all sentient life capable of sustaining it. Faced with an impossible choice, Chief destroys Halo before anyone can activate it.

Halo 2

Following the destruction of the first Halo, the Covenant launches a full-scale invasion of Earth. While Master Chief fights to defend humanity, players also experience the story through the eyes of the Arbiter, an Elite commander disgraced after failing to protect Halo.

The Arbiter’s perspective reveals the truth behind the Covenant. Their religion is built on centuries of lies, manipulated by the Prophet of Truth and the Covenant leadership.

As new Halo installations are discovered, tensions between the Covenant’s Elite and Brute factions erupt into civil war. Known as the Great Schism, this conflict completely reshapes the balance of power across the galaxy.

Meanwhile, the Flood returns under the control of the mysterious Gravemind, manipulating both humans and Covenant alike to serve its own goals.

Halo 2 ends on one of gaming’s most famous cliff-hangers. Earth remains under threat, Truth escapes to activate another Halo array, and Master Chief delivers his iconic promise to “finish the fight.”

Halo 3

Halo 3 picks up immediately after its predecessor. Truth has reached Earth and intends to activate the entire Halo network from an ancient Forerunner installation known as the Ark.

For the first time, humanity and the Elites fight together against a common enemy. Master Chief and the Arbiter lead the assault on the Ark, determined to stop Truth before he triggers galactic extinction.

Although Truth is defeated, the Flood launches one final attack. Chief and the Arbiter activate a newly constructed Halo ring to destroy the parasite before escaping aboard the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn.

The ship is torn apart during the escape. The Arbiter returns safely to Earth, but Master Chief drifts into deep space alongside Cortana, entering cryosleep until humanity needs him once again.

Halo: Reach

Although Halo: Reach released after Halo 3, its story takes place immediately before the events of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. That makes it a great game to revisit after finishing the original trilogy, especially if you want a deeper appreciation of humanity’s sacrifices during the Human-Covenant War.

Rather than playing as Master Chief, you step into the boots of Noble Six, a member of Noble Team, an elite squad of Spartan soldiers defending the planet Reach. As humanity’s most important military stronghold, Reach is home to the UNSC’s largest shipyards, research facilities, and military command. If Reach falls, Earth is next.

The Covenant launch a surprise invasion that quickly overwhelms the planet’s defences. Noble Team fights a desperate losing battle to evacuate civilians, protect key military assets, and buy humanity as much time as possible. Unlike many Halo games, Halo: Reach embraces a more grounded and tragic tone, showing the true cost of the war through the eyes of soldiers who know victory is no longer possible.

The game’s emotional finale directly connects to Halo: Combat Evolved. Noble Six’s final mission helps ensure that the Pillar of Autumn escapes Reach carrying Cortana and Master Chief, setting in motion the events of the entire Halo saga. It’s a powerful story of sacrifice, heroism, and hope, and one that remains one of the series’ finest campaigns.

Halo 4

Four years later, Master Chief awakens aboard the drifting Forward Unto Dawn near the mysterious Forerunner world of Requiem.

There, he encounters the Didact, an ancient Forerunner military leader determined to wipe out humanity. At the same time, Cortana begins suffering from rampancy, an AI condition that causes artificial intelligences to deteriorate over time.

As the battle escalates, Cortana sacrifices herself to stop the Didact and save Master Chief.

For perhaps the first time in the series, Halo 4 shifts its focus away from galaxy-wide warfare and towards its central relationship. The emotional bond between Chief and Cortana becomes the heart of the story.

Halo 5: Guardians

Halo 5: Guardians takes the story in a very different direction.

Believing Master Chief has gone rogue, the UNSC sends Spartan Jameson Locke and Fireteam Osiris to bring him home. Meanwhile, Chief reunites with Blue Team after receiving mysterious visions from Cortana.

The biggest twist arrives when Cortana returns. Having survived the events of Halo 4, she believes advanced AI should rule the galaxy to ensure lasting peace.

Using enormous Forerunner constructs called Guardians, Cortana and her new alliance of artificial intelligences, known as the Created, seize control across human and alien space.

The game ends with humanity scattered and the Created firmly in power.

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite begins after humanity has suffered another crushing defeat.

The Banished, a brutal military faction led by Atriox, have overwhelmed the UNSC and seized control of Zeta Halo, one of the most important Halo installations ever discovered.

Master Chief is rescued from space and returns to the fight alongside a new AI companion known simply as the Weapon. Created to replace Cortana, the Weapon quickly develops her own unique personality while helping Chief uncover what happened before the game’s opening.

As the story unfolds, players learn that Cortana ultimately sacrificed herself to prevent Atriox from exploiting Zeta Halo’s ancient secrets.

Chief defeats the Banished’s immediate leadership, but Atriox survives. The game also introduces the Endless, an ancient civilisation imprisoned by the Forerunners long before humanity discovered Halo.

Do You Need To Play Every Halo Game?

Not necessarily.

If you’re completely new to Halo, Halo: Combat Evolved remains the perfect place to begin. It introduces every major faction, explains the central conflict, and lays the groundwork for everything that follows.

Moonlight Peaks puts a supernatural spin on the cosy life sim formula. Instead of playing as a city dweller moving to the countryside, you’re a vampire settling into a magical realm where you can grow crops, make friends, brew potions, and learn how to cast spells. It looks incredibly charming, and we’re more than ready to live our best undead life.

Ascend to ZERO – 13th July

Ascend to ZERO is a time-bending roguelike where mastering time itself is the key to survival. The pitch sounds simple, but pulling it off well looks wonderfully tricky. Alongside the ability to stop time during play, there are plenty of items and weapons to experiment with, giving you room to shape your build as each run unfolds.

D-topia – 14th July

D-topia is another puzzle game to keep an eye on this month, this time set in a world curated by artificial intelligence. The AI’s goal is to make everyone as happy as possible, which sounds lovely in theory, but how well that actually works seems to depend on your ability to solve the puzzles in front of you. Expect a slower pace, relaxed vibes, and a quietly intriguing premise.

Raccoons to Riches – 20th July

Raccoons to Riches is a roguelike deckbuilder about a raccoon who really, really wants to make money. Frankly, relatable. The premise alone is likely to grab attention, but it also looks like a lot of fun, and there’s a demo available at the moment if you want to check it out early. This could be a wonderfully scrappy little money-making adventure.

Gurei – 23rd July

Gurei is a striking boss rush game where each victory lets you steal your enemy’s powers and push on to even greater challenges. Its use of colour is immediately eye-catching, with each boss built around its own distinct palette and visual identity. It looks stunning, though probably not the kind of game where you’ll have much time to sit back and admire the view, so be prepared for a serious challenge.

Kusan: City of Wolves – 30th July

Kusan: City of Wolves is a top-down, hyper-aggressive shooter where you fight through dangerous enemies to save Haru, a girl who is a weapon in her own right. Expect plenty of trial and error as you react to incoming attacks, use the environment, and adjust on the fly. It has a touch of Hotline Miami about it, and if it gets anywhere close to that level of intensity, it could be something special.

Corsair Cove – 31st July

Corsair Cove is a pirate city builder where you start with a shipwrecked crew and slowly turn a deserted island into a sprawling haven for buccaneers. You’ll build across cliffs and hilltops, manage production chains, keep your rowdy crew happy, and send ships out to explore, raid, and fight back against the Crown. It sounds like a wonderfully busy mix of colony sim, strategy, and high-seas nonsense.
